kde.themes.org: themes repackaged for KThemeMgr |
|
Our best friend from themes.org, Robert Flemming,
announced recently that all the 81 themes that he have collected
at kde.themes.org are presently
available in the format suitable for use with Stefan Taferner's
KThemeMgr, the most complete (to date) theme manager for KDE.
Robert does even provide the theme manager code as a package
available to download from the same place as the themes. A binary
form seems also to be available.
Even more, Robert's kindness went as far as making the famous
DrawingBoard theme
available. Many thanks to him for satisfying
the "hunger" of the many tens of people who asked for it.
NOTE: Thanks to Kevin Fisher for the signal.

KDE gains styles support |
|
Daniel M. Duley aka Mosfet wrote to us:
"I have committed a bunch of KDE theme stuff to the CVS and have some
screenshots.
Go to http://www.jorsm.com/~mosfet/kde/kdetheme.html and click the
screenshots link."
This is the starting point for the KDE theming/styling technology, which
will be officially featured prime time at KDE-2.0 release. The code
is already shaping well and the styles are nice and, most important, very
fast.

The KDE Connection |
|
Information Week Online reports about the award winning KDE.
[..] KDE certainly deserves attention, if only for two reasons: It's generally available, and it
works--two things that can't be readily said about [..] y
So all the fervor that has come out of the Qt debate hasn't prevented KDE from
moving forward. In fact, at this point it seems to be moot. In the long run, the future
of KDE and GNOME will depend not on copyrights or political positioning, but on
the success of the open-source model and of Linux.

Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 released |
|
It is already very well known that
Caldera Systems Inc. released
at Comdex the best version ever of OpenLinux: 2.2. Please, read the

LinuxWorld: Putting on a friendly face |
|
Joe Barr of
LinuxWorld signs a fairly well thought out
review of a few of Linux's GUI offers of today.
KDE receives a warm appreciation. The article should get much attention
from the KDE community, because it underlines a few misgivings inside
our project which aren't necessarily related to the quality of our code.
For example, KDE is perceived as having an "OK" potential and an "OK"
factor of coolness. Both these (second order) rankings could have their
explanation in the lesser accent the KDE community puts on hyping their
projects and their yet finished work. In any case, the article is nice
and we thank to Joe Barr for his objective work.

pyKDE-0.7. Ktk-0.4 |
|
Phil Thompson, creator of
pyKDE, announces
the release of pyKDE-0.7. Changes: support for 3 new Qt classes, 35 new KDE
classes, support for Qt-1.44, HTML documentation. Thanks Phil, this is
great work.
A.F.Lack, creator of
Ktk,
the KDE-look library for TixWish, announces the release of Ktk-0.4.
AFL says: "Version 0.4 is an "unfinished business" release and
fixes some rough edges left from the 0.3 version: the kombobox is now
complete; the file select window now honours your existing KDE file
dialog settings.". This library ought to be a treasure for Tk
developers wanting to make their programs benefit from KDE's integration
offer. Thanks, AFL.

TurboLinux mirrors KDE FTP in China |
|
Martin Konold informs that a mirror of the KDE FTP
server is now available on the central server of
TurboLinux in China. You can find
it here. This is an interesting
happening: this way, the many millions of Unix users in Asia will gain
a faster access to KDE code and applications. Given the upcoming support
of Qt hence KDE for Unicode, development help for localization from
Asian programmers will be more than welcomed.

Linux, Dressed to Kill. The article, meant to inform Macintosh users
about the power and rise of Linux, takes a close yet equilibrated look

this description: "KDE is becoming so popular that it is being shipped
with many Linux/PC systems and is the default GUI for some distributions

Mentions |
|
We've all got accustomed with the large coverage of the
traditional and on-line press on things related to IT technology. KDE
has its fair share. An especially nice mention is made in this
LinuxPower.org
item, where a discussion on experiencing open standards support on
closed systems is sparkled by the wish to play KDE games:
"The problem: KDE Games are Fun".
Antonio Larrosa discovered that the most popular journal of
Málaga, Spain, mentions KDE in relation with the
CeBIT award. And we all
know how seldom technology issues come into attention in daily newspapers.
Spanish magazine "Solo Programadores Linux" no.8 comes with a
cover CD on which KDE-1.1 RPMs for Red Hat 5.2 can be found.
Mukhsein Johari of
Grafiti Media informed us
that this company sells PCs with Linux Mandrake pre-installed.
Rhichard Barth started a KDE discussion group on ICQ.
This group is
maintained on a daily basis.
PCQuest magazine from India
contains KDE 1.1 this month on its extremely popular monthly CD. Thanks
to Rajarshi Bandyopadhyay for letting us know.

graphics user interface.
